About Our Bariatric Surgeon

Choosing an experienced and knowledgeable bariatric surgeon is the most important decision a patient can make.

Choosing an experienced and knowledgeable bariatric surgeon is the most important decision a patient can make. When choosing a bariatric surgeon for your weight loss surgery or gastric sleeve procedure, it’s critical to ask the right questions. For example: What are his certifications? How long has he been doing this particular procedure? Where did he study? His publications? How well is he acknowledged in the medical community? And, in the case of bariatric surgery… How well does he understand your ongoing frustration with weight loss?

When Should Bariatric Surgery be Considered?

A bariatric surgeon explaining weight loss treatment options to a patient.

Bariatric weight loss surgery should be considered for individuals who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or a BMI of 30 or higher with at least one obesity-related medical condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or joint problems. Even though Lap-Band has been approved for patients with lower BMI, different insurances have their own criteria and may deny approval.

In addition to BMI and obesity-related medical conditions, bariatric surgery may also be recommended for individuals who have tried and failed to lose weight through non-surgical methods such as diet, exercise, and medications. In general, you can always ask us to help you understand if you are a good candidate.

It’s important to note that bariatric weight loss surgery is not a “quick fix” for weight loss and should only be considered after careful consideration and discussion with Dr. Davtyan. The decision to undergo bariatric weight loss surgery should also take into account the potential risks and benefits of the procedure, as well as the individual’s ability to commit to the necessary lifestyle changes required for long-term success after weight loss surgery.

Overall, bariatric weight loss surgery can be an effective treatment option for obesity and related health conditions, but it should be considered carefully. Dr. Davtyan is an excellent resource to speak to as he has had the procedure and he is one of the foremost experts in the field bariatric weight loss and gastric sleeve surgery.

When Should Gastric Sleeve Surgery be Considered?

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a weight loss surgery that involves removing a portion of the stomach to create a smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach. It can be considered for individuals who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher with at least one obesity-related medical condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or joint problems.

Gastric sleeve surgery may also be recommended by our bariatric surgeon Dr. Davtyan for individuals who have tried and failed to lose weight through non-surgical methods such as diet, exercise, and medication. In some cases, gastric sleeve surgery may be recommended as a first-line treatment for severe obesity or obesity-related health conditions.

Like all weight loss surgeries, gastric sleeve surgery should only be considered after careful consideration and discussion with your weight loss surgeon. The decision to undergo gastric sleeve surgery or any bariatric weight loss surgery should also take into account the potential risks and benefits of the procedure, as well as the individual’s ability to commit to the necessary lifestyle changes required for long-term success after surgery.

Overall, gastric sleeve surgery has proven to be highly effective for many individuals who have been unable to achieve weight loss on their own.

How Does a Gastric Sleeve Work?

Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a weight loss surgery that involves removing a portion of the stomach to create a smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach. The procedure works by restricting the amount of food that can be eaten at one time and reducing feelings of hunger by removing the part of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone Ghrelin.

During the surgery, our bariatric surgeon, Dr. Davtyan removes approximately 80% of the stomach, leaving a sleeve-shaped tube that is about the size of a banana. This smaller stomach is in continuity with the pylorus and duodenum. allowing food to pass through the digestive system normally. This operation is restrictive, it restricts the amount of food one can eat, but it is not malabsorptive as gastric bypass and does not cause decreased absorption of essential nutrients.

After surgery, the patient is able to eat smaller portions of food due to the smaller size of their stomach. They also experience a reduction in feelings of hunger due to the removal of the portion of the stomach that produces ghrelin. The combination of reduced food intake and decreased hunger can lead to significant weight loss.

Gastric sleeve surgery is typically performed laparoscopically, which involves making several small incisions in the abdomen and using a camera and specialized instruments to perform the surgery. The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia and takes about one to two hours to complete.
