The Health Problems Associated With Obesity

Obesity As A Complex Health Issue

Obesity is more than just gaining extra unwanted pounds. It is a complex health issue that has been around for years, and it is a medical condition that must be given prompt attention and treatment. Otherwise, it can further develop into serious and life-threatening health complications. We have listed some of the most common health problems that may arise if obesity is left untreated. Read on below as we shed more light on the matter.

Type 2 Diabetes

As backed by scientific studies and research, being overweight can put you at a higher risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes. It’s a condition wherein the cells in your body do not respond as much to the present insulin in your body, despite making enough. If this is the case, then it’s certainly quite mind-boggling why this occurs, and even experts couldn’t pinpoint exactly how having the extra pounds can cause the disease.

However, a recent study from Harvard has shown that obesity can trigger the occurrence of insulin resistance, which is one of the major indicators of Type 2 Diabetes. Apparently, the endoplasmic reticulum (a cluster of cellular membrane inside the cells) is put under stress when you have obesity. They work double time in processing and storing the nutrients until they start sending help signals due to being overworked.

That is where the insulin receptors are activated, and if you have obesity, it will work differently than that of a physically fit body, where there is the trigger to develop into a long-term chronic disease that is Type 2 Diabetes.

Heart Disease And High Blood Pressure

Obesity is also strongly linked to developing heart disease and high blood pressure (a.k.a hypertension); the two are strongly tied to one another. Chances are your bad cholesterol will spike up in level, while decreasing your good health . This will also require your circulatory system to double the effort, considering that obese individuals have the need for more blood supply and oxygen. This will then give rise to an increased blood pressure, leading to hypertension and eventually a heart attack or in worse cases, a heart failure.

Some of the most common heart diseases that can develop are coronary artery disease and a left ventricular hypertrophy (where the left ventricle is enlarged).

Mental Health And Well-Being

Mental health is a part of our overall medical health and wellness. Obese individuals have a higher risk of gearing towards mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Their current medical state also has an impact on their daily lives as they have to bear the cross of being labeled and criticized for their appearance.

Research has shown that some obese individuals may resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as alcohol or substance abuse.
